Abstract
This project examines the practicality of providing solar panel lids for the irrigation canals in sub-Saharan countries. The work focuses on the possibility of fitting these lid to the Chókwè irrigation scheme in Mozambique, although the transferability of the scheme is discussed in detail. The literature review examines the existing position regarding solar powered irrigation systems in the region, how solar lids could help water conservation by reducing evaporation losses, and the principles on which solar panels work. An environmental assessment has been completed and different possible options for the scheme compared.
Once the optimal solution has been defined, the electricity generation is calculated, as are the probable costs of implementation. The ethics of sustainable development of agriculture and communities in the region is also discussed before concluding that the proposed project would be effective and efficient and would complement sustainable development in the region.
