Sustainability of the built environment is a leading theme in modern-day architecture whereby adherence to clean energy, minimum environmental impact, people’s wellbeing, and innovation are priorities. Notably, the urban built environment influences multiple aspects of human life, whereby the ultimate objective is to improve the quality of life for all people in the foreseeable future. The University of Manchester advocates for sustainability and has engaged in multiple projects in the built environment, which demonstrates the official commitment to innovation, clean energy, people’s wellbeing, and minimal environmental impacts. However, little information is available on the impact of the evolution of the built environment on the sustainability goals in the university. Thus, researching the strategies towards attaining sustainability at the University of Manchester’s built environment will impart knowledge on the best architectural practices, the role of learning institutions in shifting towards sustainability, and the necessary steps that may enable adoption of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals in the architecture of the urban environment.
