Mapping of Plastic Packing Recycling Facilities within the UK
Abstract
Plastic packaging use has risen significantly, increasing concerns about the associated issues
in terms of natural resources depletion and waste management. Plastic packaging consists of various
types of polymer; however, 95% of plastic packaging made using four main types of polymers, which
are PET, PP, HDPE and LDPE. This report suggests replacing the polymers that constitute the
remaining 5% with these four types that will enhance the viability of recycling. Waste scale of the
main four polymers is large enough which make the recycling process more economical and
operationally viable. In 2017, the amount of plastic packaging waste generated in the UK was
approximately 2.631 k tonnes and it is predicted this amount will be 2,760 k tonnes in 2030. Assessing
the opportunities to recycle this waste is the main target of this report
