Abstract
This study explores learners’ motivation and engagement among Saudi Arabian students learning English at home and those studying abroad in an English-speaking country, specifically Ireland. The researcher adopted a qualitative approach. The study population consisted of 12 male and female Saudi English learners’ , undergraduate and post-graduate level students, divided equally into two groups (studying abroad (SA) in Ireland vs. studying at home (AH) in Saudi Arabia).
In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher conducted interviews to collect participants’ experiences regarding the effect of studying abroad and at home on their motivation to study the English language. The interviews were conducted in the students’ L1 so that they could give full expression to the factors which motivate their desire to learn English. The key points from their responses were transcribed into English by the researcher.
Thematic analysis indicated that the reasons for learning a second language in the SA participants are mainly triggered by passion and circumstances. Conversely, the study reveals that AH group are mainly inspired by passion and a desire to learn another language. However, every individual has unique differences that inspired them to acquire a second language, such as a desire to communicate, a desire to understand about different cultures, and a passion.
