Blockchain for e-commerce in developing countries – A case study of Saudi Arabia
Abstract
The aim of this research is to evaluate the relevance of cryptocurrency, including blockchain technology, to e-commerce operations in Saudi Arabia. The main purpose of blockchain technology is automated and manual storing and sharing of digital assets amongst users in a well-protected manner. It is an evolving technology which has positive implications for the e-commerce sector. The study used a qualitative research methodology where an open-ended questionnaire was sent to four managers who are employed at Amazon Saudi Arabia. These participants were targeted using a gatekeeper strategy. At Amazon, increased security, cost savings, faster transactions and improved system are some recommendations identified. However, the integration of blockchain within Amazon should also require extension of infrastructure and integration of better supplier mapping. The employees believe that costs of implementation, uncertainty in adoption, acceptance issues and cultural factors may continue to act as barriers to technology adoption.
