Adapting the Collaborative learning method in developing English language teaching and learning for primary school students in Saudi Arabia
Abstract
This study is aimed at investigating the effectiveness of collaborative learning (CL) strategies in students’ academic and social achievements and in developing their attitudes to studying English as a second language at primary level in Saudi Arabia. It also sought to find out the extent of the use of CL in English classrooms in the same context. The study also aimed to investigate the obstacles facing the application of CL methods. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five English teachers to study the reality of CL in terms of teachers’ knowledge of it, its importance, and its use in teaching. Moreover, interviewing the teachers helps to understand their perception about their student’s perception towards the use of CL in their studying English as a second language.
The important results of study were the following: firstly, the importance of the use of collaborative learning methods among teachers. Secondly, the use of CL strategies is at an average level by teachers in teaching compared to its importance attributed to them, due to the presence of some difficulties in using the strategies in the classroom. Thirdly, the students’ positive attitudes towards CL from their teacher’s point of view which has as clear impact on their participation, interaction, and their capabilities.
