Abstract

Abstract: Learner autonomy is considered as one of the most controversial issues in second language learning field, which make it an interesting topic to be studied and investigated particularly its applications in the teaching and learning materials. According to the current circumstances of Covid-19 and in line with the Saudi Arabia 2030 vision of the national development, the present study was carried out to analyse the autonomous features within the English teaching textbooks in the Saudi's schools for the primary and the secondary stages which been chosen randomly by applying a mixed methods in collecting and analysing the data. By adopting two frameworks, one is a general and another in-depth framework to analysing the data which been carried out by a quantitative method, then applying a qualitative method to analysis the findings, after all a comparative method will be applied on the finding to evaluate its appropriateness in prompting the Saudi learner's autonomous behaviour. The investigation revealed that there is a gap in applying the autonomous features between the two textbooks which aiming to teach different stages and age groups of learners.
