Abstract
This study delves into the evolving dynamics of heritage preservation within the
context of Saudi Arabia's ambitious Vision 2030. Recognizing the pivotal role of
cultural heritage in shaping national identity and fostering sustainable development,
this research explores planners' perceptions regarding heritage conservation
strategies, challenges, and their integration into the urban development narrative of
Saudi Arabia. Utilizing qualitative methods, specifically, semi-structured interviews
with 19 professionals in the field, this study sheds light on the complexities of
balancing economic development with heritage preservation. The findings reveal a
nuanced understanding among planners of the inherent value of heritage, not only
as a cultural asset but also as a catalyst for economic diversification and community
enrichment. Moreover, the study identifies critical factors influencing heritage
conservation, including governance, legislation, community awareness, and the
imperative for a unified strategy. This study emphasizes the need for a holistic
approach in Saudi Arabia, integrating modernization with cultural heritage
preservation, to promote sustainable urban development and cultural identity
management.
