Abstract

This report proposes a symmetrical double-sided LC compensated capacitive power transfer (CPT) system. The system is developed and tested for high voltage isolation between fence energizer and main power lines. The CPT technology is an effective method for charging purposes, in which electric fields between the coupler’s metal plates are used to transfer power. The advantages of the CPT technology make it an alternative to traditional inductive power transfer (IPT) system. A thoughtful design of a capacitive coupler is also proposed in this paper for future development of the CPT system. In the methodology design of the circuit, the fundamental harmonics approximation (FHA) method is used to investigate the circuit working principle. The CPT system topology is set to work at a constant current mode and to charge a capacitor up to 1000 V within 1 second. a comprehensive simulation is performed for the circuit parameters, in which the results showed successful operation for the system. A prototype model is designed and assembled to validate the proposed system. Ultimately, the experimental results proved that the designed system is efficiently capable for charging applications and could be an alternative to a standard two-winding insulation protection system.
