Translation of Conceptual Metaphors in Media Discourse: Arabic to English Comparative Analysis

Abstract

This study provides a detailed explanation of metaphors viewed as a figurative language device and as conceptual metaphors that are viewed as a process of the human thoughts and daily conversations. This study provides a comparative analysis of conceptual metaphors found in Arabic Saudi Press (SPA) Agency news article and the English translations of these articles as provided by the British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC). The topic of these article concerns the Saudi Vision 2030. It covers different aims and projects of Saudi vision 2030 such as Privatisation Program, music Genres belonging to specific cultures, Hajj Hackathon, fighting corruption etc. This will be established by employing the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (1980/2003) in both Arabic and English languages. Conceptual metaphors in source texts will be established by adopting the Semantic Field Theory of metaphors as suggested by Steinhart and Kitty (1994) to determine the lexical field from which the source domain is provided. The study also aims to examine the translation techniques used by the BBC in translating the Arabic conceptual metaphors and the applicability of such methods to render the intended meanings of the metaphors.
