Abstract
Aim:
This present review aimed to investigate the complications of porcelain laminate veneers.
Methods and Search Strategy:
The search methodology in this review was reported in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) standards. To find the available published literature on this topic, a thorough search was conducted on the academic databases at the University of Dundee. Search terms were found by looking through titles, abstracts and index terms of relevant articles and articles known to the researcher. These were initially tested using PubMed. Subsequently, a search was conducted in 2023 on the following databases: Scopus, Embase, and PubMed
Results:
Initially, the results of the search for relevant studies showed 377 studies that can be potentially related studies. After removal of the duplicate studies, only 198 studies remained. These studies were initially screened, 127 excluded and 71 articles screened at the full text stage and 50 studies were found to be non-relevant to the topic of the review. Finally, after applying this inclusion and exclusion criteria 21 studies were included.
Conclusion:
There were 5 main complications that were found to commonly occur in porcelain laminate veneers. They were fracture of porcelain, debonding of the veneer, secondary caries, gingival recession, and the need for endodontic treatment. In addition, bruxism was found to have a negative impact on the long-term survival of porcelain laminate veneers which commonly leads to fracture.
