Abstract

This project explores the efficacy of cybersecurity vulnerability scanning tools Nessus, Nmap, and Metasploit within a VMware and Ubuntu desktop environment. With a focus on assessing the tools capabilities to detect and manage network and system vulnerabilities, this research conducts a comprehensive analysis across various phases including tool integration, scanning procedures, vulnerability exploitation, and result evaluation. The findings reveal that while each tool possesses unique strengths in identifying security risks, their integration provides a robust defence mechanism against potential cyber threats. This research highlights the critical role of these tools in enhancing cybersecurity defences and discusses their limitations and potential areas for improvement. The systematic approach adopted here aims to offer insights into the strategic application of these tools in real world scenarios, emphasising the importance of a proactive cybersecurity posture.
