Perceived barriers and facilitators to physical activity amongst Saudi Arabian females living in the United Kingdom

Abstract

Aim To explore the potential barriers and facilitators for physical activity in Saudi Arabian women living in the United Kingdom. Methods Semi-structured interviews were conducted with Saudi Arabian women currently living in the UK. Participants were recruited purposively via email until data saturation of emerging themes and International Physical Activity Questionnaires (IPAQ). Interviews were digitally recorded, transcribed and analysed using an iterative/thematic approach; IPAQ data was analysed descriptively. Ethical approval was obtained – University of Nottingham REC: 230-1901. Results A total of 20 responses were obtained and 15 eligible respondents have been recognised from the 20 answers. A total of 5 refined themes and 19 sub-themes have been identified and agreed with the second coder. The results of this research show that pleasant climate, availability of appealing parks, gymnasium accessibility, low gym cost, engaging fitness employees and attention to all ages, independent lifestyle as students, food habits, efficient transportation and UK culture are facilitators for physical activity in the UK. This study identified low accessibility of amenities, absence of information, social obligations, climate, gym prices, absence of transport system, availability of vehicles, absence of cultural and family awareness, social practices as obstacles Saudi Arabian women face to do physical activity in Saudi Arabia. Discussion Access to areas for walking, bike riding and gyms and incorporating these in the planning process by the health authority should be a priority in Saudi Arabia to promote physical activity. Participants suggested some points to assist females conduct physical activity in Saudi Arabia, such as enhancing gym availability, reducing gym prices, raising awareness through social media of the importance of physical activity, and improving accessibility and availability of facilities. Further studies are required to investigate the magnitude of these obstacles and facilitators to physical activity involving a large area of Saudi Arabian women in the UK.
