The role of Tourism in the long-term economic development of Saudi Arabia

Abstract

This qualitative research study explores the contributions of tourism to the economic development of Saudi Arabia, with a specific focus on the factors influencing tourism growth and the sustainability of the tourism sector for long-term economic growth. Content analysis and semi-structured interviews were employed as the method of data collection, engaging eight experts from the Kingdom's tourism industry. The content analysis process involved transcribing and coding interview data to identify emerging themes. The semi-structured interviews provided rich insights into the experiences and perceptions of industry experts, shedding light on the complex interplay between tourism and economic development. Key findings from the study revealed that tourism has played a crucial role in driving the economic growth of Saudi Arabia. Participants emphasized that tourism has led to job creation, revenue generation, and infrastructure development. The respondents highlighted the significance of cultural heritage and religious attractions as major drivers of tourism growth. Additionally, the experts indicated that diversification of tourism offerings, along with government investments in infrastructure, has been instrumental in sustaining the sector's development for long-term economic growth. The findings underscore the importance of adopting sustainable practices and ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage to ensure the sector's viability for future generations. This study 1 offers a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationships between tourism, economic growth, and sustainability. Moving forward, future research endeavors could delve deeper into specific aspects such as the role of digital marketing, the impact of changing consumer behaviors, and the integration of sustainable practices in tourism development. This research provides valuable insights into the multifaceted dimensions of tourism's contributions to economic development in Saudi Arabia. The study's methodology, findings, and implications offer a solid foundation for informed decision-making, sustainable practices, and the further advancement of the Kingdom's tourism industry.
