Background: Given that paediatric nursing students are in direct contact with the child, who is the patient, as well as their families, they require to exercise effective communication skills. While research has shown that simulation-based learning has successfully improved communication skills and confidence for nursing students, the impact of this for students in Saudi Arabia is not yet known due to the limited focus of this research area in this country. Aims: To examine the effectiveness of simulation pedagogy towards the improvement of communication skills of third-year undergraduate paediatric nursing students at Princess Noura University in Saudi Arabia. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental design approach, 154 students were equally assigned into two groups; one group was exposed to simulation-based learning and while the other exposed to traditional lectures. Each student had a pre- and post-intervention test to assess their communication skills. Qualitative interviews were conducted with each student to determine their learning experiences following the intervention. Implications to practice: This study will determine the experiences of third-year nursing students’ experience o simulation-based learning compared to traditional lectures in Saudi Arabia and will assess the impact on developing their communication skills. The findings could influence the future of the method of skills development for clinical practice for nursing students.
