Abstract

Microgrid is considered as a solution to the increasing demand for electricity. Microgrid essentially depends on the renewable energy resources for the generation of electricity. In spite of its advantages, several challenges in implementing microgrid have arisen. One of these challenges is the intermittent nature of renewable resources which can affect the system reliability and power quality. The variations of renewable resources can lead to imbalance between the generation and consumption in the microgrid and due to this the system frequency and voltage may fluctuate. However, adding battery energy storage to microgrid can help to regulate its voltage and frequency and improve the power quality and reliability of the system. These issues are discussed in this thesis. To examine the benefits of installing battery energy storage in microgrid, an isolated wind diesel hybrid system with one wind turbine, diesel generator, battery energy storage with voltage source converter controller and consumer loads is modelled using the MATLABSimulink software. The system is simulated with and without battery energy storage and the results for frequency and voltage for each case are presented and compared. Microgrid performance is tested under different scenarios with sudden load and generation changes. The results of this thesis show an improvement in the system frequency and voltage of microgrid due to the use of a battery energy storage system.
