Abstract
This reflective essay discusses the creation of a documentary titled "Passion for New Beginnings," which examines the integration experiences of three Sudanese immigrants in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Developed alongside two classmates for a dissertation project, the film aims to highlight the resilience, success, and societal contributions of these individuals amid new cultural challenges. This essay, an individual work by myself, begins with an overview of the political conflicts in Sudan that have compelled many citizens to seek asylum abroad, particularly focusing on the United Kingdom. I discuss the UK's challenges in managing an increasing number of asylum seekers and critique the delays in asylum processing.
The essay explores the choice of documentary filmmaking, emphasizing its storytelling power and the use of the participatory mode for authenticity. I detail the production process, including location selection, character portrayal, technical aspects, and post-production choices. The essay highlights the challenges encountered during production and the practical insights gained. The documentary aims not only to present the immigrant experience to the UK audience but also to humanize the stories of asylum seekers, illustrating their efforts to integrate and contribute to their new society. I conclude the essay by expressing the intention to propose the documentary to the Al Jazeera Network, considering its potential impact and wide-reaching audience.
