The impact of the Arab Spring on Egyptian Political Culture
Abstract
This dissertation looks at the 2011-2013 Egyptian uprisings and considers the impact
these uprisings had on the political culture of Egypt. The dissertation builds on the concept of
political culture and traces the development of the same through Egypt’s political history.
The dissertation then uses the social movement theory approach to analyse the uprisings
of 2011-2013 and understand their impact on the country’s political culture. The dissertation
uses a variety of primary and secondary resources to arrive at its conclusion; these include
scholarly literature, blogs, satirical performances, graffiti, and music.
The dissertation engages with a range of scholars such as Bellin, Gause, Weyland,
Sayyid-Mersot, Cook, Oweidat, and Tilly among others to offer a rich overview of Egypt’s
politics and the future course it may take. Given the limited word count, it is my hope that I
have done justice to such an ambitious topic within such a short timeframe.
