Abstract

The increasing significance of power quality concerns arises in response to the proliferation of sensitive loads, advanced technologies, and the expanding utilization of renewable energy applications. This project addresses this issue by employing fuzzy logic control to manage the compensation of reactive power generated by supercapacitors. This compensation mitigates harmonic distortion arising from nonlinear loads due to the supercapacitors’ fast response and the total harmonic distortion (THD) is utilized to evaluate their effectiveness according to IEEE-519. Furthermore, fuzzy logic is employed to regulate the mitigation of voltage sag issues through series capacitors, followed by batteries. The performance of them is assessed, considering the specific conditions of the case study. Comprehensive evaluations prefer the implementation of series capacitors over batteries. Optimal capacitor placements and sizing are determined through particle swarm optimization, addressing voltage sag concerns, and enhancing the voltage profile. MATLAB/SIMULINK simulations verify the proposed approach's efficacy in mitigating power quality issues and strategic compensation.
