Abstract

Description

This thesis explores Sufism and mystical reason in the thought of Muhammad Abed al-Jabri within the framework of his project to critique Arab reason, It examines the place of mystical knowledge in his epistemological construction of Islamic heritage, analyzing and evaluating his reading of Sufi discourse in light of the foundations of knowledge in Islam, This analysis is conducted through two central figures in the Sufi tradition: al-Ghazali and Ibn Arabi. Al-Jabri's approach to this heritage relies on a classificatory epistemological perspective that distinguishes between three systems of knowledge: exposition, demonstration, and mysticism, He posits mysticism as an independent epistemological system based on unveiling, experience, and symbolic interpretation, linking its formation to the historical and cultural contexts that contributed to the development of Sufi discourse within Islamic civilization. In his analysis of mystical reason, he adopted an interpretive reading of the Sufi tradition, employing al-Ghazali's model as representative of a mystical experience with a disciplined, ethical, and Sunni dimension, and Ibn Arabi's model as representative of philosophical mysticism based on unveiling and existential interpretation, He made these two models the foundation for understanding the structure and limits of mystical knowledge within the Islamic tradition. Al-Jabiri argues that mystical knowledge represents a cognitive pattern distinct from demonstrative and experiential reasoning, based on symbolism, allusion, and inner experience, He believes that understanding Sufi discourse requires a critical and analytical reading that reveals its epistemological structure and interpretive mechanisms, rather than simply accepting the Sufi heritage without question. The research concludes that Al-Jabri’s approach to Sufism and the mystical mind is characterized by a critical epistemological nature with a modern background, which focused on analyzing the cognitive structure of mysticism more than on investigating its doctrinal contents, which led to generalizing the concept of mysticism to Sufism without a precise distinction between its trends, Thus, this study contributes to providing a critical analytical reading of the concept of the mystical mind in Al-Jabri’s view, and evaluating his position on Sufism in light of the legal texts, while highlighting the methodological differences between the disciplined mysticism of Al-Ghazali and the philosophical mysticism of Ibn Arab.
