The Effectiveness of Using an Online Blackboard System at the University of Bisha in Saudi Arabia during Covid-19
Abstract
Due to Covid-19 several educational institutions around the world were closed due to health mandates. As a result, worldwide, students suffered learning losses. To minimise these losses, educational institutions conducted classes online, and delivered course contents using Online Learning and Teaching Platforms (OLTPs). The aim of this study is to analyse the effectiveness of using OLTPs to conduct online classes during Covid-19.
The research study applies descriptive quantitative methodology. The dependent variable in the study was “effectiveness” of using OLTPs and was measured by analysing the extent to which faculty members at the University of Bisha (UB), who used the OLTPs, Blackboard, were able to fulfil pedagogical requirements. Five pedagogical requirements were identified by conducting a literature review. These five requirements were the independent variables in the study and were namely, “familiarisation”, “socialisation”, “communication”, “knowledge dissemination”, and “self-reflection”.
A 5-point Likert Scale survey was used to collect primary data from the faculty members at the UB. The findings from the survey indicate that the faculty members were able to utilise Blackboard to deliver course contents at a highly effective level. However, the effectiveness of students could be improved, especially in terms of communicating using Blackboard. The findings further indicate that the faculty members felt strongly about the growth of their teaching skills and capabilities after taking online classes using Blackboard. Moreover, the faculty members strongly agreed that they felt confident in integrating Blackboard into regular teaching methods.
Implications of the research study for academics, practitioners, and researchers are stated. The research limitations are also discussed, and future recommendations are made based on the findings of the study.
