Exploring the Recent Approaches Used to Enhance Second Language Learning via Social media inSaudi Arabia
Abstract
This study explores contemporary approaches used to enhance second language
learning via social media in Saudi Arabia. The research examines the impact of using social
media in the classroom context in Saudi Arabia universities. The study explores this concept
by looking at the perspectives of EFL teachers and students on using social media apps in
English classrooms when teaching students in Saudi Arabian universities. In addition, the
study examined the impact of using social media platforms on student’ English language
motivation, attitude, proficiency, skills, and the way the teacher teaches.
The study involved 40 participants, three teaching assistants and 37 students, both
females and males. All participants received a questionnaire with questions related to
motivation, attitude, and English language proficiency. The data was collected using the
mixed methods approach: quantitative and qualitative. The questionnaire was distributed
to the students, whereas the teachers were interviewed. Both instruments were applied
virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The data revealed that students are more motivated when they use social media
platforms in English language learning. Also, most of the students indicated that they use
their smartphones most of their day. In addition, students stated that using social media
platforms in English language learning helps them to develop different language learning
skills such as reading, listening and writing. However, it can also be concluded, based on
the number of students’ responses and teachers during the interview, that these social
media platforms cannot be a replacement for the traditional teaching method. Students
and teachers indicated that attending classroom and face to face learning is more effective
than using only social media platforms.
