Plastic Recycling- Future Sustainability
Abstract
Plastics are perhaps one of the more widely known materials in the world. Its use
in many applications continues to baffle many professionals. However, the
manufacture, use and disposal has rendered plastics waste available in almost
everywhere. To solve one plastic problem ‘unsustainability’, recycling solutions
provides opportunities to make plastics sustainable. However, effective plastic
recycling methods are limited while other methods add more harm to the plastic
problem. This project explores how plastics can be made sustainable for future
use. A case study approach, in which a close-loop recycling and a chemical
recycling case scenario were used in meeting the projects aims and objectives.
The results saw that (1) closing the loop on plastics could add sustainability
features to plastics and (2) chemical recycling of plastics through gasification
presents great opportunities for making plastics sustainable.
