Abstract
The boroughs of London are full of life and lived memories of the people. They are in a person’s mind and others are shared socially. Collective memory can be explained as a shared mind of individuals memories. Representing collective memory in the city can play a manifest social, cultural and historical role between communities of the city. Revealing the hidden layer of collective memory to the citizens of the city can serve positive application of identity, culture, rights knowledge and more. Setting the three elements of revealing, representing and preserving the collective memory within architecture as design principles can create a more social sustainable dimension. As the structural dimensions or principles of architecture have predominantly been at the forefront of environmental and economic attention. Communities of the city seek more attention for a social dimension to the regeneration and development of the urban design. Collective memory can interact with topics that concern communities such as social networks, health, the identity of community, civic pride, neighbourhood perceptions, and community participation. All considered, preservation followed by a correct representation of citizens’ collective memory will enhance social diversity, importance and facilitate development in architectural design in the city. The aim of this paper is to investigate how collective memory can change the perspective of the city.
