Abstract

A detailed review of Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) with various types of wind turbine designs, including their relative advantages and limitations, is presented. Based on this review, a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG), one of the prevailing industrial solutions for grid-connected wind power applications, has been chosen as a comprehensive case study in this work. MATLAB/SIMULINK (software) based simulations are studied in detail using a dynamic model for the large-scale Doubly Fed Induction Generators (DFIG) wind turbine. The developed model is simulated for different wind speeds, and its overall performance under normal and faulty operating conditions is investigated at different voltage levels. For simulation purposes, the average DFIG model is considered. Dynamic response of DFIG based is analysed upon a voltage fluctuation at 0.03 s of the simulation time on 120 kV grid side. This voltage fluctuation is assumed to be a consequence of a fault occurrence at a remote power system, connected to the 120 kV grid. This fault is implemented in the simulation through a 6-cycle-based voltage drop of 0.5 pu. The transient response of the DFIG-based WECS is depicted in the form of relevant waveforms and is included in the “results and discussion” section.
