Abstract
As the KSA construction sector is a crucial industry, it contributes with approximately 6,2% to the GDP and plays an important role in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the current KSA construction sector has a negative impact on the environmental aspect. In fact, although many construction firms throughout the world have successfully applied SDGs in their practices, little information is available on the manner in which KSA private construction companies deal with SDGs related to environmental sustainability. Despite the KSA efforts to improve its construction methods and the 2030 vision, construction companies struggle to meet the SDGs in relation to environmental sustainability. Therefore, this paper addresses the manner in which private construction companies in KSA deal with the SDGs related to environmental sustainability which include G6.G7.G12.G13.G14.G15, the barriers that prevent the adoption of environmental sustainability of construction sector, and provide recommendations that can help improve SDGs in the KSA private construction companies. Two large private construction companies are chosen from two different regions of KSA (Riyadh, Jeddah). Meanwhile, this study uses a qualitative method based on conducting interviews with selected participants. These participants are 4 project managers and 4 civil engineers participated. This study findings indicate that construction companies in KSA did achieve G6 and G13 but missed to meet G7.G12.G14.G15 as they require more effort. This study notes that the barriers that are faced by construction companies include high cost and a lack of knowledge, awareness, regulations, government monitoring, and suppliers. As a solution, this research provides recommendations that can help KSA private construction companies achieve SDGs in the KSA.
