Background The literature highlights the impact of digital technologies on public libraries and how Covid-19 accelerated the adaption of technologies in public libraries. Public libraries should have staff who are equipped with the digital skills required to use digital tools and electronic services. Digital competencies of public library professionals are becoming essential to meet the evolving needs of library patrons and effectively serve them in the digital age. Aims The study aims to explore the digital competencies of public library professionals in England to provide high-quality services to users in a rapidly evolving digital environment. Methods The study was conducted in the form of a survey, with data being gathered via an electronic questionnaire. It is predominantly a quantitative study, although a small amount of qualitative data was collected through the open-ended answers in the online questionnaires. The online questionnaire was distributed to public library staff in England. 52 responses were received. Questionnaire results were analysed using primarily descriptive statistics. Results The results indicate that while the majority of public library staff feel confident using digital technologies and meeting patrons’ digital needs, a lack of knowledge in emerging technologies, troubleshooting common technical issues, and programming skills was identified. Staff, however, face challenges when trying to enhance their digital skills and provide high-quality services for patrons, including a lack of time and support for professional development, lack of up-to-date digital resources, lack of staff and lack of training opportunities. Conclusions Enhancing the digital competencies of public library professionals is crucial for providing high-quality services for library patrons in the digital age. This study emphasises the importance of offering regular training opportunities for staff and provides practical recommendations that could be applied to enhance digital competencies for public library staff.
