Abstract
Knee bracing has emerged as a prevalent intervention following ACL reconstruction (ACLR) surgery, aimed at safeguarding the healing process of the graft and facilitating early mobilization. However, the present systematic review endeavors to consolidate findings from clinical investigations that specifically explore the effects of knee braces in the post-ACLR period. The research encompasses data collected based on predetermined criteria, including comparisons between brace utilization and non-utilization, randomized clinical trials, studies that assessed knee stability and function during final follow-up, and clinical assessments of knee function.
Various parameters were considered during the analysis, encompassing the use of diverse graft types, distinct brace designs, and varying durations of brace usage. According to the findings derived from this study, the efficacy of knee braces remains inconclusive, with insufficient evidence to substantiate their importance. The outcomes of the reviewed studies consistently demonstrate that knee braces do not yield improved results in the context of ACLR. Consequently, the routine utilization of knee braces following ACL reconstruction is deemed unnecessary.
Does not support the efficacy of knee braces, there may be specific situations where brace usage is warranted, contingent upon factors such as patient-specific conditions, surgeon preferences, or the presence of additional knee instability. Therefore, engaging in thorough discussions with qualified healthcare providers is imperative to determine the most appropriate post-operative care plan, accounting for the specific nuances of each patient's case.
Description
In the academic year 2023, I successfully concluded my dissertation at Salford University within the esteemed Prosthetics and Orthotics department. The principal objective of my research was to undertake a comprehensive investigation comparing the outcomes of employing knee braces following Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction surgery with those resulting from a non-braced approach. This study sought to contribute to the existing body of knowledge in the field of prosthetics and orthotics, particularly in the context of post-surgical interventions for Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction.
