Abstract

Megaprojects are considered an indicator of development for countries and help in these countries' economic growth. They are also characterized with complexity and high cost. Moreover, megaprojects have always been closely associated with delivery delays and cost overruns. Such projects are also specified by the presence of a large number of stakeholders, as well as by attracting great political and media interest. This dissertation aims to identify and rank the most important factors affecting megaproject delivery in terms of time and cost. To address this, quantitative research was conducted based on 38 factors identified from the literature review as the most important factors that researchers found in their studies. They were then divided into three different categories. A questionnaire was conducted to identify the most important factors affecting the delivery of mega projects regarding time and cost from the owner, contractor, and consultant's point of view in each of the identified categories. One hundred participants were targeted to fill out the questionnaire. However, only 82 responses were received. The dissertation results agreed with what was found in the literature review. Most of the conclusions drawn refer to the responsibility of the owner and contractor for most of the factors affecting the delivery of megaprojects. Finally, recommendations are made to those involved in the construction industry to overcome these problems and improve the delivery of such projects.
