Investigation the Readiness of Saudi Construction SMEs for BIM Implementation
Abstract
BIM or Building Information Modelling has been recognised as a powerful means for enhanced cooperation, data distribution, 3D design, and efficiency within the AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) sector in developed countries. It comprises an array of procedures, outlooks, equipment, policies, knowledge, processes, and systems which have fundamentally transformed how AEC operations are envisioned, planned, and function. Due to its many rewards, developing countries are also increasingly considering its implementation as to improve their standards and not be left behind amidst the global competition. Among these developing nations, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has embarked on a modernising mission, referred to as VISION 2030, in which automating and digitalising the AEC sector is one aspect. This research endeavours to comprehend whether and to what extent Saudi SMEs (Small and Medium Sized Enterprises) within the country’s AEC sector are prepared for accommodating such a transition in their systems and structure. This is crucial as the SMEs of any country comprise the core of the economy, not to mention that Saudi AEC rivals its globally recognised petroleum sector which the world relies on for energy. Decision makers in the KSA need to know what state the SME-AEC sector is in terms of being ready for change towards BIM as to adjust their policies accordingly. This project explores theories of implementing new systems, readiness paradigms for integrating new systems, literature regarding KSA-AEC, and BIM implementation. Based on them, interviews and questionnaires were set up as to gather data and thereafter, analyse via SPSS and thematic analysis. The analysis of results indicated that although the KSA-AEC-SMEs sector sees itself requiring BIM, however, too many practical obstacles exist. It would seem that the country is prepared for deployment of BIM only if a straightforward blueprint exists which explains, in detail, how it will be done, assuring stakeholders’ concerns are respected.
