Social Support as A Mediating Variable between Depression, Thought Disorder, and Feeling Satisfied with Life among Elderly Parkinson's Patients in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

| dc.description | Abstract: The present study aimed to identify the nature of the relationship between depression, thought disorder, and life satisfaction among elderly patients with Parkinson’s disease in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and to examine the role of social support as a mediating variable in these relationships. The study adopted a descriptive correlational design and was conducted on a sample of 150 participants whose ages ranged from 60 to 71 years, with a mean age of 64.34 years and a standard deviation of 2.84. In addition, a pilot sample of 100 participants was used to verify the psychometric properties of the measurement instruments, The main sample included 100 elderly patients with Parkinson’s disease, consisting of 35 males and 65 females, with a mean age of 66.74 years and a standard deviation of 4.19. The study utilized the Social Support Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Optimism–Pessimism Scale, and the Life Satisfaction Scale (developed by the researcher), The results revealed significant relationships between social support and each of depression, thought disorder, and life satisfaction among patients with Parkinson’s disease. Significant associations were also found between social support and thought disorder, as well as between social support and life satisfaction. Furthermore, the findings indicated the presence of both direct and indirect effects of social support, as a mediating variable, on depression and thought disorder as independent variables, and on life satisfaction as a dependent variable. The results also demonstrated that social support mediates the relationship between depression, thought disorder, and life satisfaction among patients with Parkinson’s disease, The study recommended the importance of strengthening psychological and social support programs and activating family and community support roles to improve mental health and quality of life among patients. | |
| dc.description.abstract | المستخلص العربي هدفت الدراسة الحالية إلى التعرف على طبيعة العلاقة بين الاكتئاب واضطراب التفكير والرضا عن الحياة لدى مرضى باركنسون من كبار السن في المملكة العربية السعودية، والكشف عن دور المساندة الاجتماعية كمتغير وسيط في هذه العلاقات. اعتمدت الدراسة على المنهج الوصفي الارتباطي، وطبقت على عينة بلغت (150) مفحوصًا تراوحت أعمارهم بين (60–71) عامًا بمتوسط عمري (64.34) سنة وانحراف معياري (2.84)، بالإضافة إلى عينة استطلاعية قوامها (100) مفحوص للتحقق من الخصائص السيكو مترية لأدوات القياس. واشتملت العينة الأساسية على (100) من مرضى باركنسون من كبار السن بواقع (35) ذكورًا و(65) إناثًا بمتوسط عمري (66.74) وانحراف معياري (4.19). استخدمت الدراسة مقياس المساندة الاجتماعية، ومقياس الاكتئاب (بيك)، ومقياس التشاؤم والتفاؤل، ومقياس الرضا عن الحياة. وأسفرت النتائج عن وجود علاقة بين المساندة الاجتماعية وكل من الاكتئاب واضطراب التفكير والرضا عن الحياة لدى مرضى باركنسون، كما تبين وجود علاقة بين المساندة الاجتماعية واضطراب التفكير، وبين المساندة الاجتماعية والشعور بالرضا عن الحياة. وأظهرت النتائج وجود تأثيرات مباشرة وغير مباشرة بين المساندة الاجتماعية بوصفها متغيرًا وسيطا، وكل من الاكتئاب واضطراب التفكير بوصفهما متغيرين مستقلين، وبين الرضا عن الحياة بوصفه متغيرًا تابعًا، كما تبين أن المساندة الاجتماعية تتوسط العلاقة بين الاكتئاب واضطراب التفكير والشعور بالرضا عن الحياة لدى مرضى باركنسون. وأوصت الدراسة بأهمية تعزيز برامج الدعم النفسي والاجتماعي وتفعيل أدوار المساندة الأسرية والمجتمعية لتحسين الصحة النفسية وجودة الحياة لدى المرضى. | |
