Critically investigate the Influence of Nursing Leadership on the Quality of Nursing Care during the Covid-19 Pandemic: A Scoping Review
Abstract
Healthcare and social care professionals have carried an extremely difficult and heavy burden during the Covid-19 pandemic. This has impacted healthcare professionals especially nurses in term of their capabilities, performance and social life. This research main purpose was to critically investigate on the influence of leadership on the quality of nursing care during a covid-19 pandemic
Methods: A scoping review was conducted across health and medical science databases (PubMed, CINAHL, and Web of Science). Journal articles were screened against inclusion and exclusion criteria relating to nurses as a population, performance as an outcome and leadership as a factor. Quality appraisal was assessed using CASP tool.
Results: Total 17 studies were included in this review which reported on the relationship between leadership and nursing profession performance in relation to the critical situation such as covid-19 pandemic. Papers indicated that covid-19 pandemic has a considerable impact on the hospital front-line worker’s psychological and mental health. Results suggested that nurses are at higher risk of mental health issues and low self-esteem during this pandemic. Leadership play critical role in ensuring optimal productivity and performance among nursing profession.
Discussion: The key limitations of this study was the lack of all elements of scoping review could be followed completely given the limited time and resources available. In future study critical discussion can be developed relating nursing mental and physical health and how leadership can reflect.
