Item Restricted Plumage Mimicry and Drumming Patterns in Woodpeckers: Unraveling the Complexity of Visual and Acoustic Signals in Species Recognition(Saudi Digital Library, 2024) Alharbi, Sahar; Kort, SelvinoWoodpeckers are known for their distinctive drumming behaviours and diverse plumage patterns, which play crucial roles in communication and species identification. While previous research has highlighted the importance of ecological and geographical factors in driving plumage mimicry among sympatric woodpecker species, the relationship between plumage similarity and drumming behaviour remains underexplored. Specifically, it is unclear whether woodpeckers that exhibit plumage mimicry also share similar drumming rhythms or if they diverge in their drumming patterns to maintain species boundaries. This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by investigating the drumming behaviors of five woodpecker species: Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), Hairy Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus villosus), Smoky-brown Woodpecker (Leuconotopicus fumigatus), Checkered Woodpecker (Veniliornis mixtus), and Golden-collared Woodpecker (Veniliornis cassini). Drumming sound recordings were collected from the Xeno-canto website, and key drumming parameters—drum duration, beat number, speed, and cadence—were analysed using Raven Lite 2 software. These findings indicate that while plumage convergence may occur to reduce interspecific competition, behavioural divergence in drumming ensures effective species identification. The study highlights the complex interplay between visual and auditory signals in woodpecker species, providing new insights into the ecological and evolutionary factors driving species coexistence and adaptation.4 0Item Restricted How Flooding is Putting Historical Heritage at Risk(Saudi Digital Library, 2024-08-29) Hanbuli, Waad ALI; Duarte, Natalia VillamizarUrban Flash Flooding is referred to excessive rainfall for a time period of more than six hours in an urban area which has hard surface development stopping the water to soak in ground resulting in to water running through roads and streets and damaging the overall urban land. As per the recent study by world bank, it has been revealed that urban areas are becoming more vulnerable to urban flooding and the key reasons behind are rapid urbanization, climate change and lack of resilient urban management. Floods in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia is considered the most horrific among all-natural disaster and accounted for 34% of death tolls. Emissions from transportation and urban development significantly aggravate the problem and the city of Jed dah is experiencing extreme flash floods causing loss of lives and damage to property. Considering the ancient importance of the Jeddah Historic area, Al-Bald, it suggests the need to conduct research that aims to revitalize this area with innovative urban design techniques to protect it from this horrific incident while preserving its historic character. Moreover, analysis like flood risk analysis, flood susceptibility analysis as well as rainfall analysis have been carried out to analyse the vulnerability of the study area to flash flooding. The analysis revealed that the area is more likely to be impacted by floods during extreme rainfall events. This demands for a sustainable urban design that increase the sponginess of the area to avoid water accumulation. Resultantly, the multilevel strategy-based design optimization incorporates the sponge city theme. Therefore, including wetland, roof gardens, rainwater garden as well as permeable pavements in the existing design of the historic area, which reduces the area’s overall vulnerability to flood and rain-related calamities and serves as a model for comparable urban design practices. This study advances flood prevention in the realm of urban design by providing a broad framework for architectural and urban design.12 0Item Restricted What aspects do flexible office companies consider in the design of their offices?(Saudi Digital Library, 2024-08-01) Saifislam, Miga; Derakhshanalavijeh, RoyaIn an era where workspaces are rapidly evolving, the design of flexible office spaces has become pivotal in shaping the future of work. Although extensive research exists on topics like ergonomics and innovative work approaches, there appears to be a significant gap in understanding whether and how flexible office companies are incorporating these insights into their design strategies. This paper addresses the research question: 'What aspects do flexible office companies consider in their office designs?' The study aims to identify the key aspects these companies should consider, and to propose innovative design strategies that address these factors. Drawing on interviews with both practitioners and users, the research highlights the limitations inherent in the standardised, one- size-fits-all approach to designing spaces. Findings from the study underscores the need for adaptability and flexibility, operational and management efficiency, as well as the importance of considering employee well-being and sustainability to ensure current and future success. In doing so, the research urges a paradigm shift towards innovative and personalised design strategies that align with evolving needs of modern workplaces.8 0Item Restricted ‘Evolving Dynamics of Sustainability Disclosure in Saudi Arabia: A Documentary Analysis’(Saudi Digital Library, 2024) Azouari, Shatha; Bhuiyan, FarukThis study investigates how the sustainability disclosure practices of Saudi Arabian companies have evolved and how they are influenced by Saudi Vision 2030, international pressures and local regulatory frameworks. This study is built upon the stakeholder theory to gain an in-depth understanding of the impact of different stakeholder requirements on sustainability disclosure. It investigates the extent to which this reporting is transparent and accountable. The study adopts a qualitative methodology focusing on sustainability and annual reports from 18 Saudi Arabian companies in 9 sectors, including energy, finance, healthcare, and telecommunications. The selected companies were chosen based on their market value and the availability of relevant sustainability disclosures for the years 2022 and 2023. The key findings indicate that significant progress has been made in advancing sustainability disclosures in Saudi Arabia. This is through the incorporation of sustainability practices into corporate strategies with a primary focus on Vision 2030 objectives, Tadawul's regulations and growing international pressures. While certain sectors, particularly energy, utilities, materials, and finance, show significant progress in their approach, healthcare and insurance lag in ESG integration and international standards, highlighting a need for improved governance frameworks and more consistent regulatory oversight. As a new and interesting finding, the study underscores the importance of Vision 2030 and Tadawul Disclosure Guidelines as catalysts for change and calls for enhanced capacity-building and regulatory support to ensure that Saudi companies can meet national and international sustainability expectations. The study provides theoretical and managerial insights into the broader discourse on corporate transparency and sustainable development, offering invaluable insights for academic communities, managers, and policymakers in Saudi Arabia.2 0Item Restricted Macroeconomic Factors and Insurance Growth in Saudi Arabia(Saudi Digital Library, 2024-09-10) ALLEHAIBY, Ebtehal; Sefiloglu, OnurThis dissertation examines the impact of key macroeconomic factors on the growth of the insurance sector in Saudi Arabia between 2016 and 2024. The analysis employs an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression model to explore the relationships between the Insurance Index and variables such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Tadawul All Share Index (TASI), oil prices, Saudi Arabian Interbank Offered Rate (SAIBOR), inflation rate, unemployment rate, and net earned premiums. The findings reveal a significant negative relationship between GDP and insurance sector growth, which contrasts with expectations established by existing literature. The study also identifies a positive and significant correlation between TASI and the performance of the insurance sector. However, oil prices, interest rates, unemployment rates, and net earned premiums showed less direct impact. The results highlight the complex interplay between macroeconomic variables and the insurance sector, providing valuable insights for policymakers, investors, and industry stakeholders in Saudi Arabia.6 0Item Restricted Investigating Organisational Success Determinants for Adoption of Innovation in Saudi Deep Technology and Environmental Engineering Businesses(Saudi Digital Library, 2024-02-01) Badereg, Ahmad Talal; El-Hamalawi, Ashraf; Fotwe, Francis EdumPerformance within organisations aims to create a structure to boost working conditions and employees’ attitudes. Innovation performance is the process that encompasses the generation of ideas and strategies, as well as presentation and development and developing innovation from a resource-based perspective. Companies should invest significantly to sustain and enhance capabilities for innovation. Goals of innovation include increased market profile, high quality, and increased revenue, profitability, discovering new horizons, attracting more investment, motivating and stimulating employees and maintaining a competitive edge in the complex marketplace. The aim of this research is to critically investigate innovation enterprise mechanisms and success determinants for Saudi deep technology environmental engineering businesses, in order to develop a validated framework for innovation enhancement practices in the Kingdom. This research was carried out through an empirical study designed for the purpose. Wallach’s 3-Dimensional model and the Organisational Culture Index (OCI) were used for survey questionnaires in order to identify the Kingdom’s cultural profile (e.g. bureaucratic, innovative, supportive) and validating the developed conceptual framework. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to seek information and knowledge through describing the central theme. Case studies included deep technology environmental engineering businesses and government-based companies in the Kingdom. Initial results were promising and paving the way for innovation; however, most of the companies were facing enormous challenges, as use/implementation of innovation practices were ranked low amongst deep technology environmental engineering businesses in Saudi Arabia. Although, most of the variables were identified in the conceptual framework, it has noted that the current culture was not rather innovative or supportive but bureaucratic. Most significant challenges were lack of leadership, shortages of skills, managerial capacity and capability, lack of appropriate KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and readiness of organisation in the Kingdom. The Conceptual framework was validated via different iterations using empirical data. The result of this work is the first empirical study in the Kingdom which has made an attempt to investigate innovation practices among deep technology companies and proposing a validated conceptual framework for successful implementation of innovation-based culture. Finally, recommendations were provided to overcome the key challenges which were identified in this research. The recommendations include training and 5 development program for improving skills, development of leadership, reforms in Saudi Educational system and adopt appropriate KPIs for innovation.5 0Item Restricted Forecasting the Benefits of Nationwide Home Energy Efficiency Improvements on NHS and Social Care Budgets by 2040 in UK(Saudi Digital Library, 2024-08-27) Alkhathami, Saleh; Yaghi, AbdallahHealthcare and social care expenditures in the UK have risen significantly due to factors such as an aging population, advancements in medical technology, and the increasing prevalence of chronic illnesses. These novels engage with the concepts of space and place as fundamental to the construction, negotiation, and contestation of female migrant identities and everyday experiences in Britain. The thesis draws on feminist geography to theorise key concepts such as ‘the right to the city’, ‘embodied identities’, ‘intersectional embodiment’, ‘moral geographies’, and ‘third space’ in analysing women’s spatial experiences. The discussion of these four texts is structured around three main lines of argument. First, I argue that gendered spatial relations shape women’s access to and use of certain spaces, as well as their freedom, behaviour, and representations of their bodies in public, work, and leisure environments. Second, I contend that Muslim women’s experiences of space as gendered intersect with other forms of social inequalities, including class, race, religion, and migration status. Finally, the third argument focuses on women’s resistance to and negotiation of these intersecting forms of marginalisation through the construction of new, hybrid, and creative identities. These in-between spaces are not static blends of two cultures, but dynamic, ambiguous, and continually evolving contexts for identity formation.18 0Item Restricted Digital Transformative Project for MakeUpLabs.co.uk: Enhancing Online Presence Through SEO, Content Marketing, and Affiliate Strategy(Saudi Digital Library, 2024-08-15) Zarnoog, Ghada; Nayer, DaudThis Digital Transformative Project focuses on repositioning MakeUpLabs.co.uk as a high-impact affiliate marketing platform for eco-conscious beauty products.
