Evaluating the Long-Term Influence of Culture-Led Regeneration on Civic Pride, Community Cohesion, and Social and Economic Inequalities: The Case of Hull
(Cardiff university, 2024) Albalawi, Najat; Thomas, Smith
ABSTRACT Hull, a historically industrial city, has faced significant socio-economic decline and territorial stigmatization in recent decades. In response to these challenges, the city was designated as the UK City of Culture in 2017, an initiative aimed at revitalizing the local economy, enhancing civic pride, and fostering community cohesion through cultural investment. While the event year saw an increase in tourism, local engagement, and economic activity, questions remain about the initiative’s long-term impact. This dissertation explores the sustainability of the positive changes resulting from the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 initiative, with a focus on how it influenced civic pride, community cohesion, and socio-economic inequalities. Using a mixed-methods approach, incorporating qualitative interviews and document analysis, the research critically examines whether the benefits of the cultural initiative have been sustained in the years following 2017. This dissertation concludes that while the Hull UK City of Culture 2017 brought short-term benefits to the city, it has fallen short in addressing deeper structural issues. The study highlights the importance of ongoing investment and long-term strategies to ensure the sustainability of culture-led regeneration in post-industrial cities like Hull.

Deep Learning Approaches for Multivariate Time Series: Advances in Feature Selection, Classification, and Forecasting
(New Mexico State University, 2024) Alshammari, Khaznah Raghyan; Tran, Son; Hamdi, Shah Muhammad
In this work, we present the latest developments and advancements in the machine learning-based prediction and feature selection of multivariate time series (MVTS) data. MVTS data, which involves multiple interrelated time series, presents significant challenges due to its high dimensionality, complex temporal dependencies, and inter-variable relationships. These challenges are critical in domains such as space weather prediction, environmental monitoring, healthcare, sensor networks, and finance. Our research addresses these challenges by developing and implementing advanced machine-learning algorithms specifically designed for MVTS data. We introduce innovative methodologies that focus on three key areas: feature selection, classification, and forecasting. Our contributions include the development of deep learning models, such as Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Transformer-based architectures, which are optimized to capture and model complex temporal and inter-parameter dependencies in MVTS data. Additionally, we propose a novel feature selection framework that gradually identifies the most relevant variables, enhancing model interpretability and predictive accuracy. Through extensive experimentation and validation, we demonstrate the superior performance of our approaches compared to existing methods. The results highlight the practical applicability of our solutions, providing valuable tools and insights for researchers and practitioners working with high-dimensional time series data. This work advances the state of the art in MVTS analysis, offering robust methodologies that address both theoretical and practical challenges in this field.

Walking the Talk: Bridging Policy and Reality in Urban Walkability
(University College London, 2024-09) Fatany, Sarah Waddah; Cavoli, Clemence
This study explores the policy-reality gaps in improving walkability in the cities of Freetown and Maputo, with a focus on informal settlement communities. The study employs a qualitative approach in analysing policy documents and interview transcripts with residents and other stakeholders to try shape the understanding of the lived experience with walking. The findings reveal a huge contrast between policy intentions and the lived realities in informal settlements. The extent of acknowledging walking as a legitimate mode of transport is frustratingly low, despite walking being the most used form of mobility. The little attention given to walkability in both cities also fail to translate into tangible improvements in overall safety, accessibility, and pleasurability experiences of pedestrians. While policies acknowledge the lack of safety and access for pedestrians, they fail to acknowledge the comfort and ease of walking for pedestrians. The study highlights the marginalization of the urban poor communities that rely on walking as a mode to access services, jobs, and other opportunities. Calling for a shift in policymaking to prioritize pedestrian needs first. Which acts as an equalizing mode, contributing to reducing inequalities.

(University of North Texas, 2024-12) Alhumud, Waleed Ghazi; Bryce, Renee
This dissertation explores several methods and insights to enhance productivity by saving time and effort, improving testing skills, and reducing testing costs. The first contribution provides software testing tools based on selected criteria. Holding team-based competitions to detect faults in different programming languages is introduced in the second contribution. In the last contribution, we utilize an optimization technique of regression testing to enhance software developers’ productivity. The results indicate that using software testing tools based on selected criteria saves time and effort by automating repetitive tasks and detecting faults early. Additionally, improving testing skills and learning new programming languages through holding team-based competitions to catch bugs in different languages leads to enhanced productivity. More than 93% of the participants agree that these competitions not only increase their testing skills but also assist them in learning new languages. Moreover, utilizing test suite prioritization might improve software developers’ productivity by reducing testing costs and time by executing only half of the prioritized test suites to obtain 100% of code coverage utilizing our proposed criteria. The contributions in this dissertation aid in the ongoing effort to advance testing practices in software development. They provide methods for practitioners and organizations to improve software quality by enhancing software developers’ productivity.

(University of Sheffield, 2024-08-29) Alaydaa, Sarah; Ogunmuyiwa, Hakeem
Investigating how social media advertising shapes Saudi cultural identity is the goal of this study. The research reviewed the previous studies that conducted in the last decade to derive its results and conclusions. Social media platforms have fundamentally changed how people interact and communicate. Thus it's important to understand how these virtual social phenomena are affecting our feelings and ideas about ourselves and each other. Finding out how social media advertising affects cultural identity in a good and bad way is the goal of the research. The benefits can be seen in the freedom to engage with others, pick up new information, and deal with the outside world, as well as in the education of other people about their cultures. The negative consequences could manifest as a person adopting Western values, breaking free from the dominant social norms, or acquiring values and customs that are incompatible with Arab culture. Thus, the researcher thinks that the social media has positive effects on cultural identity and on society.
