Item Restricted Interior Design Factors and Energy E ciency in Residential Apartments: A Simulation-based Analysis using IES-VE. Case Study: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia(University of Reading, 2024-09-26) Binzain, Afnan; Essah, Emmanuel; Jones, RoryThis study offers a comprehensive analysis of how interior design factors contribute to the energy efficiency of residential buildings in Jeddah. The motivation behind this research stems from two factors: the increasing energy demand driven by population growth and climate change challenges, and the need for proactive measures to reduce energy consumption in residential buildings. Despite its importance, particularly during the use phase, the role of interior design in energy efficiency is rarely addressed in the literature. Four standard apartments were selected as case studies, all located in the same seven-story building. The objective of this research is to evaluate how interior design parameters—specifically artificial lighting, daylight exposure, and color choices—impact energy efficiency. This analysis is conducted using detailed architectural modeling and simulation with IES-VE software. The results of this study show that incorporating the following interior design factors can lead to significant energy savings: (1) optimizing the quantity, quality, and distribution of artificial lighting, (2) ensuring sufficient daylight illuminance with the use of double-glazed windows and shading devices, and (3) choosing high reflectance color schemes. Implementing these strategies can reduce lighting energy consumption by 23 percent, and total energy consumption by 3.4 percent to 4.6 percent annually. However, these results depend on maintaining sufficient space between buildings to allow for adequate daylight, which may require policy consideration. Therefore, one of the key recommendations of this paper is to make real estate developers aware of the importance of interior design features during the design and construction phases. Additionally, ensuring appropriate building distances in new districts is crucial to optimize daylight use and foster a more sustainable environment .25 0Item Restricted INCLUSIVE DESIGN TO SUPPORT INDEPENDENCE LIVING OF ELDERLY CITIZENS IN SAUDI ARABIA(University Putra Malaysia, 2024-04) Alfetais, Aysha Mnea; Noor, Mohd Zairul bin MohdGlobally, the elderly suffer an increased number of falls in their homes. Notably, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has a high percentage of elderly falls due to due to inadequate home interior design for independent living. However, the Ministry of Housing is currently unable to fulfil these housing requirements. In this study, the researcher aimed to document best practices in interior design that support independent living for the elderly. The study looks into the current challenges that elderly people face in interior home design. Accordingly, the study develops and formulates building codes that support independent living for the elderly to reduce falls among this population. A qualitative method based on a case-study approach was employed, whereby a total of 12 informants, including 10 elderly and two professionals from Saudi Building Codes, were purposefully and snowball-identified. Data are collected through thematic review, in-depth semi-structured interviews, and physical observations of the interior design of existing elderly homes. The data obtained from the review and interview were analysed based on a thematic analysis matrix using Atlas.ti software. The thematic review revealed that the integration of i inclusive principles in interior design plays a crucial role in promoting independent living for elderly citizens. It is understood that accessibility, flexibility, safety, environmental comfort, and social interaction have been considered and incorporated as requirements in interior design houses in most countries across the globe. The result further revealed that most of the elderly faced obstacles related to the lack of an elevator for easier movement in the building, and the main challenges that increased the risk of falling and leading to serious injury among the elderly in their independent living in Saudi homes were due to slippery floors and physical barriers. The findings suggest some important changes to the existing residential codes for future practice to reduce the high rate of falls among the elderly. First, the codes formulated, which include flexibility 1029.14.1, social interaction 1029.5, and accessibility codes 1105.1.8, should be considered by the Saudi Building Code Committee, the Saudi Council of Engineers, and the Ministry of Housing in providing homes to the elderly. The findings of the study will therefore be helpful to policymakers in understanding the issues of poor housing that affect elderly independent living. Therefore, the findings of the study contribute to improved knowledge of the framework of best practices for interior design that provide an inclusive strategy to support independent living for the elderly.54 0Item Restricted Ephemeral: Interaction Interior Design Sculpture for Luxury Hotel Lobbies(University of Edinburgh, 2024) Albinali, Sarah; Craig, LynneThis dissertation explores the role of interactive interior design sculptures in enhancing guest experiences within luxury hotel lobbies. These strategies are designed to offer memorable, unique, and culturally immersive accommodations, catering to the increasing demand for authentic travel experiences and promoting the growth of tourism in the region.36 0Item Restricted Application of Social Ecological Model to Identify Physical Activity Barriers in Saudi Arabia(Texas Tech University, 2024-05-11) Bokhari, Iman A; Debajyoti, PatiBackground Obesity and non-communicable diseases have been on the rise, posing a global threat. Due to this, physical activity has garnered global attention. Despite several studies proving the relation of physical activity to favorable health outcomes, many unidentified barriers prevent individuals from engaging in physical activity. This is highlighted in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where despite government initiatives, few studies are exploring the barriers to physical activity within the country. Objective Understanding the issues that adult Saudis face in pursuing or attempting physical activity is the first step to encouraging a healthier lifestyle. The objective of this study is to identify the barriers to physical activity. These barriers include physical, mental, and perceived on individual and community levels. Methodology This cross-sectional quantitative study is the first to use a social-ecological model as a guideline to reveal the interacting factors and barriers prevalent in Saudi Arabia’s society with a descriptive design approach to identify the barriers to physical activity among adults in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The survey consisted of 230 participants across two primary healthcare facilities in Northern Riyadh, providing information for actual and perceived barriers towards physical activity faced by Saudi citizens. Institutional and social barriers were found to be the most common barriers among the specified populations. Other barriers found varied depending on the different demographic characteristics. Results Transforming and analyzing the data from the survey showed several key results. For overall physical activity barriers work was reported the most reported barrier among both men (𝑥 = 3.08, SD = ±1.45) and women (𝑥 = 3.36, SD = ±1.41). The built environment was also a commonly reported barrier among both men (𝑥 = 2.76, SD = ±1.43) and women (𝑥 = 3.14, SD = ±1.37). The data analysis showed a significant disparity between men and women concerning perceived barriers. Women reported higher barriers on individual level as will policy level barriers. Other significant results include that married individuals (𝑥 = 2.43, SD = ±0.76) encounter more barriers than single individuals (𝑥 = 2.23, SD = ±0.83). While with monthly incomes of 9,000 SAR faced more barriers than the rest (𝑥 = 2.51, SD = ±0.77). Education also played a role as individuals with Diploma holder were they reported individual barriers to be the highest and Master degree holders face Institutional barriers more than the other categories. Individuals in Western Riyadh encountered more barriers to physical activity (𝑥 = 2.61, SD = ±0.88), followed by Eastern Riyadh residents (𝑥=2.52 SD= ±0.80). Finally, families with 1 to 3 children had the most barriers to physical activity (𝑥=2.53, SD= ±0.75). Conclusion Many healthcare providers and policymakers aim to increase physical activity levels to address various health concerns, including obesity and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). This study identifies the barriers preventing adults living in Riyadh, SA, from engaging in physical activities and highlights how these barriers interact to limit physical activity levels among Saudis. Upon analyzing the comprehensive results of mean averages and multiple linear regression tests, it became evident that the Saudi population faces numerous barriers to physical activity, spanning five categories: individual, social, institutional, community, and policy barriers. These obstacles vary in intensity across different demographic categories. Notably, the analysis revealed that females encounter more barriers than males, especially in individual and policy-related domains. Additionally, individuals with different educational levels experience higher individual, institutional and policy barriers compared to social and community barriers. It's worth noting that community barriers were not prominent in the regression model, indicating a need for refinement in the tool's indicators to capture which community barriers require attention in future studies. However, the mean average of community barriers highlighted community norms and values as one of the physical activity barriers within the Saudi populace. Institutional barriers emerged as particularly relevant among both sexes and different age categories, emphasizing the need for further exploration of factors such as work hours, environmental conditions, and policy influences. Recommendations include further investigation into individual barriers, particularly among older age cohorts and females, as well as exploring specific policy obstacles faced by females, which were less prevalent among males. These findings can inform governmental initiatives, designers, and planners in developing suitable interventions tailored to specific demographic categories within Saudi society. They provide a framework for similar studies targeting diverse social strata. Moreover, the study introduces a novel approach utilizing behavioral economic theories of nonrational behavior agents to enhance the design of health care environments and other public spaces. This approach aims to help adult Saudis to adopt healthier lifestyles and become more active without requiring direct and conscious decision-making. The study's findings can be applied in various studies targeting specific social categories, facilitating the classification of the order of barriers these categories face and planning interventions accordingly.24 0Item Restricted The Relationship of Architectural Design and Interior Spaces Design to Promote Creative Thinking(University of Sheffield, 2023-11-17) Alshahrani, Heba; AlChokhdar, YussurThe intersection of architectural and interior design is a focal point within the architectural realm, influencing the organization and structure of spaces. As posited by Lawson (2001), architecture plays a pivotal role in shaping interiors, with the spatial arrangement impacting human activities through a shared architectural language. This symbiotic relationship, as underscored by Alimin and Pertiwi and Purwaningrum (2021), involves architects and interior designers preserving cultural identity and accommodating diverse lifestyles. Recognizing the profound influence of architecture on personal identity and behavior, the study emphasizes the significance of interior design in meeting human needs for well-being. The dissertation, rooted in the author's experiences in teaching interior design and pursuing a master's degree in architectural design, explores the reciprocal impact of the two disciplines. Highlighting architectural constraints faced by interior designers, the research aims to enhance creative thinking through human senses, utilizing museums as a case study. Dodd and Jones (2014) affirm museums' role in inspiring creativity and fostering well-being. The six-chapter research structure includes an introduction, literature review, research design, case study analysis, findings presentation, and conclusions with recommendations, providing a comprehensive exploration of the interconnected fields.52 0Item Restricted Phenomenological Inquiry into Essence Chairs: Unveiling Subjective Significance(Saudi Digital Library, 2023-12-20) Alsalem, Abdullah; Parsons, Abdullah; Gomez, CeciEssence chairs embody a design philosophy that seeks to uncover the fundamental nature and significance of chairs through a phenomenological approach. Phenomenology, as applied to design, emphasizes the subjective experience of objects, shifting focus from their objective qualities to their essence as perceived by individuals. Essence chairs are thoughtfully crafted to evoke a sensory and contemplative experience, inviting users to engage with the chair beyond its functionality. By employing phenomenological reduction, designers strip away preconceptions and biases, enabling a deeper understanding of the chair’s essential qualities. The aim is to create chairs that resonate with users on a profound level, prompting reflection, connection, and a heightened appreciation for the underlying essence of design.48 0
