Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM/CAM) have become popular in dentistry over the past 25 years. They are particularly useful in fabricating ceramic restorations without the need for traditional dental laboratory methods. In recent years, computer-aided dental restorations have become prevalent in dental laboratories and offices. This is because of the ability to fabricate dental restorations such as, crowns, fixed partial dentures, implant abutments, and inlay-only and full-mouth reconstruction. CAD/CAM technology is more efficient and accurate, and it is likely to yield ideal outcomes. Because of continual developments in CAD/CAM systems, new methods of production and new treatment concepts are to be expected. The systems and materials available will continue to evolve so they can improve and enhance dentistry. This article is a review of the published literature on machinable glass ceramics. Topics include an overview of the field, the history of CAD/CAM and dental ceramics. In addition, the meaning of machinability, the factors that influence it and the machining systems that use CAD/CAM technology are treated. Finally, there is a discussion about the main machinable glass ceramics according to microstructure, machinability, and mechanical, physical and optical properties.
