Abstract
Many remote villages in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia lack connection to the national power grid. One method of supplying such villages with electricity is an islanded MicroGrid (MG), which integrates renewable energy resources (i.e. solar and wind) with a storage system. However, it has proved challenging to optimize the ability of an islanded MG to provide power at minimum cost and 100% power supply availability. This paper analyses meteorological data through an iterative method to examine the effectiveness of various combinations of PhotoVoltaic (PV) panels and Wind Turbines (WTs), including cost, availability, reliability and environmental considerations. It employs a case study focusing on forty typical apartments (equivalent to ten villas) situated in a rural area near Tabuk in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
