Abstract
Introduction: Paraquat has been shown to induce the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can lead to oxidative stress in the epithelial cells. Such stress contributes to inflammation and oxidant injury which are both associated with conditions involving organs (e.g. acute kidney injury, AKI) and tissues (e.g. pathology of chronic wounds). Ellman’s Reagent (5,5’-dithio-bis-[2-nitrobenzoic acid]) (DTNB) and resazurin (RESA) are two compounds used to combat odour generation during wound healing. These compounds may also possess antioxidant properties which remain to be elucidated. Aim of study: The aim of this study was to (i) investigate the potential antioxidant properties of Ellman’s Reagent and RESA on paraquat-induced oxidant injury in renal epithelial NRK52E cells and (ii) compare any effects to those observed using three established antioxidants with differing properties; tempol, EUK-134 and resveratrol.
