Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on the Pharmacy Market in Saudi Arabia
Abstract
Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has been sudden in its global impact and has led to critical decisions on how to control the spread of the infection, such as by social distancing. These measures have in turn impacted the Saudi economy and its pharmacy markets.
Study objectives: To investigate the impact of COVID-19 on pharmaceutical and medical devices companies in Saudi Arabia, and the epidemic’s further impact on those involved in the Saudi pharmacy market.
Methods and subjects: A cross-sectional study design was conducted to collect data from a sample of 59 study participants. The data collection instrument, a questionnaire, was distributed to personnel in the Saudi pharmaceutical industry by e-mail and WhatsApp, due to the current pandemic conditions. questionnaire was developed to suit local conditions, following a review of the literature.
Results: The main study findings showed that the COVID-19 pandemic had impacted on the Saudi pharmaceutical and medical devices market. However, this impact was perceived as temporary within 2020, and the market was expected to regain its in the second half of 2020.
Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on both the private and public sectors of the pharmacy market in Saudi Arabia, Social distancing and controls on travel have been the main methods of reducing this impact.
Recommendation: Safety measures must be implemented across all sectors and communities, and in all social activities.
