Abstract
Background: according to recent dental surveys, dental caries prevalence has
dropped, and patients have retained their teeth for more extended periods. This
leads to further dental complications such as tooth wear which may present with
some dental problems such as impaired dental aesthetics. Tooth wear is the 3rd
most common dental condition in the UK. This review will investigate the
different treatment modalities for tooth wear and the indication of each.
Aim: To review and assess the published knowledge of tooth wear which
include the prevalence, aetiology, assessment, and emphasis on the indication
of each treatment modality.
Research method and result: an electronic search of PubMed, Cochran
Library and Web of Science was carried out that include Guidelines, Journal
papers, and textbooks. Databases were searched up to January 2021, and a
total of 237 articles were included in this review.
Conclusion: Restorative treatment is indicated when the patient complains
about dental aesthetics and/or function. Composite resin has shown promising
outcomes for treating tooth wear conditions. Overdentures are a conservative
option like direct composite restoration, and conventional crown is the least
desirable due to the high risk of technical and biological complications. A proper
assessment and knowledge of aetiology are essential before treatment. Early
detection of tooth wear is not straightforward. Dentists should undertake
preventive measures once they identify tooth wear to delay the commencement
of the restorative cycle.
