dc.description.abstract | This dissertation consists of two parts. First, it presents a practical translation of an academic article in a handbook from English into Arabic in a bilingual format. The article “Foundations and recommendations for research in access technology,” which is written by Yue-Ting Siuis, is taken from The Routledge Handbook of Visual Impairment edited by John Ravenscroft. The article’s genre belongs to special education; however, the author integrates multiple themes of technology and research methods into the discussion. Second, the translation is followed by a critical analysis section that is divided into two chapters, each one focuses on discussing central theories of translation. The first chapter addresses equivalence in translation as approaches, methods, and procedures. Vinay and Darbelnet’s translation procedures and Catford’s translation shifts applications are discussed in more detail in relation to the translation of the selected text. The second chapter looks beyond language at elements of translation’s purpose. Vermeer’s skopos theory, a prominent functionalist approach, is discussed theoretically and practically. It demonstrates how translation can be tailored to meet the demands of a target audience. | |
