Abstract
Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of
death and disability worldwide. One of the strategies for preventing
cardiovascular disease biomarkers is citrus flavonoids.
Objectives: To determine the effect of citrus flavonoids on endothelial
function, blood pressure and lipid profile in healthy people.
Methodology: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases were used for this
systematic review. Ten randomised controlled trials targeting changes in blood
pressure, endothelial function and lipid profile were selected. These studies
were conducted on healthy adults between 2004 and 2024.
Results: A total of 576 participants from 10 studies were discussed. These
participants were healthy and were both male and female between 18 and 75
years old. The effect of citrus flavonoids on endothelial function, blood
pressure, and lipid profile were the main outcomes in this review. Studies
have demonstrated no significance for lipid profiles. Conversely, they
indicated that citrus flavonoids could affect blood pressure and endothelial
function.
Conclusion: Overall, the current systematic review did not indicate the effect
of citrus flavonoids on the lipid profile. Citrus flavonoids could positively affect
blood pressure and endothelial function.
Description
To investigate the positive effects of citrus flavonoids on endothelial function,
lipid profile, and blood pressure among healthy adults. Researchers may focus
on prevention rather than treatment by looking at these markers in healthy
adults. This is consistent with the increased emphasis on preventative
medicine and overall health. Studying these characteristics in healthy people
can provide a more detailed mechanistic understanding of how citrus
flavonoids affect heart health without the complicating elements encountered
in pathological situations
