Annotated Translation of Medical Text about Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Therapy in Light of The Skopos Theory
Abstract
In this commentary, the translator discusses her Arabic translation of the English medical ST,
Umbilical cord Stem cell therapy: the gift of healing from healthy newborns, which was published in
2006 in the US and written by Dr David Steenblock and Dr Anthony G. Payne. This study intends to
translate selected sections of the ST within the framework of the Skopos theory. Byrne (2006, p.44)
assumes that the Skopos theory produces a more flexible framework in translation, in which the
translator selects the most efficient strategies that meet the skopos, or purpose, of the translation,
which is to produce a functionally equivalent TT. Structurally, this commentary is classified into six
main division as follows: division one, which includes the introduction of this commentary; the
division two, which presents the role of medical terms in technical translation; division three which
provides an overview of the ST analysis; division four, which outlines the translation brief; division
five, which discusses the translation theory adopted in this study; and division six, which explores the
difficulties encountered in the translation process and the strategies used to overcome these
difficulties. Finally, a conclusion is provided to summarise the study and related findings.
