Abstract
This project focuses on the conceptualisation, design, and development of a dual-purpose information Kiosk for public organisations. The kiosk is intended to fulfil two primary functions: delivering information services and acting as a subtle donation tool. By combining these features, the design enhances engagement and contribution in both indoor and outdoor contexts.
The project followed structured engineering and design methods guided by a comprehensive Product Design Specification (PDS) that defined product and performance requirements. Market and competitor research provided insights into user behaviour, environmental conditions, and unique selling points, ensuring the kiosk was effectively positioned for public use. Compliance with British Standards and electronic display regulations was incorporated alongside risk assessments to address hazards during use or installation.
The final concept demonstrates technical feasibility while introducing a unique selling point through its dual role as both an information hub and a donation platform. The study also highlights future opportunities for kiosk development including the opportunity of hypered kiosks as versatile multi-use platforms suggesting that this design contributes to emerging trends in technology. Overall, the project delivers an accessible solution that enhances user experience and provides a foundation for further prototyping and testing.
Description
The information kiosk is designed with a dual purpose, offering organizations the ability to both inform and encourage contributions in a seamless way by turning users' curiosity into a meaningful contribution. The final design has laid a solid foundation for future development. The next phase of will focus on prototyping and testing. Building and evaluating a working prototype will provide critical insights into usability and technical performance in public environments, helping to identify areas for refinement and ensuring the final product delivers a reliable and meaningful experience.
As technology continues to advance, future development is expected to focus on expanding user experiences and increasing functionality. Trends such as transforming kiosks into multi-use public points and adopting more hybrid solutions that combine multiple services at an affordable cost are likely to shape the market. These developments could create new opportunities but also introduce competitive challenges by bridging information, engagement, and contribution. The kiosk has the potential to become a valuable tool for a wide range of public environments, supporting both present needs and future opportunities.
This project provides a valuable opportunity for developing more interactive public information kiosks. By aligning functionality with user experience, the design offers benefits for organisations and establishes a platform for future growth and technological integration.
