A Proposed Model of Automated, Peer, and Teacher (APT) Feedback and Its Impact on L2 Learners’ Engagement and Writing Performance Changes Over Time.
(University of Southampton, 2024-12) Alsharif, Seham; Şahan, Özgür
Enhancing the quality of teacher feedback to students' work is a challenge in L2 writing contexts, especially in Asian educational settings. L2 teachers generally have numerous responsibilities and might not have sufficient time to give focused feedback on content. This, in turn, might prevent substantial progress in L2 writing. A novel approach has the potential to solve this particular issue by combining various sources of feedback. In this context, Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE) tools can ensure accuracy, while peer feedback can address various aspects of accuracy and content. This approach frees up teachers to concentrate more on the content and ideas. Such a model, which incorporates automated, peer, and teacher feedback (APT), not only enhances writing improvement at both the surface and meaning levels, but also increases the engagement of L2 learners. This is because it goes beyond traditional feedback techniques that stretch outside the conventional red-pen corrections, fostering a far more enriching and supportive learning environment. By following a mixed-methods design utilising students’ essay writing drafts, pre-test and post-test, observation notes, focus groups, reflective journals, and post-study questionnaire, the integrated data findings suggested the following. First, the APT has decreased the feedback items/errors the students produce in their essays over time. Moreover, they become able to make longer essays with fewer errors. In addition, the APT collaboration work on L2 students’ essays was relatively successful. Although every source overlapped a little with the other at the beginning, over time, every source acted uniquely complementing the other and providing a comprehensive model for improving the L2 writing. This improvement would not be possible if the students were not engaged. Despite some influencing factors that affect certain students’ engagement with the model, the findings showed that the use of three sources facilitated a positive behavioural, cognitive, and affective engagement gradually in the L2 writing context.

Saudi Arabia 2034 World Cup: analysis of the supply chain management, coordination and legacy changllenges
(Middlesex University London, 2024) Bakhsh, Ghazl; Kornilaki, Marianna
The Saudi Arabian government's choice to organize the 2034 World Cup represents a gigantic leap forward, both for the political and cultural life of the country. Placing the event within the framework of worldwide sports diplomacy emphasizes the effect of the event that transcends only sport (Ettinger, 2023). Nevertheless, this is much more than just a complicated process; rather, it is an endeavour, which is carried out in front of several difficulties, especially logistics, coordination and legacy planning (Sugden and Tomlinson, 2020). The logistics issue that needs the most attention is the fact that holding such a big event within the Saudi context itself creates some severe difficulties. From the transport infrastructures to the accommodation facilities is an area that needs to be addressed to ensure that the tournament runs smoothly and provides sportsmen and spectators a seamless event (Olivereau, 2022). Consequently, the coordination among general governmental agencies, sports federations, enterprises and international organizations is another big challenge that is faced. Getting unity and harmony among these mixed entities is the main task of the organization behind the successful World Cup (Burton and Naraine, 2023). Additionally, after the short-term issues, are the long-term repercussions also known as the legacy of the World Cup. This concept covers economic, social, and cultural levels, with each level having its specific consequences. In-depth insights and analysis of these repercussions are necessary for policymakers, urban planners and society at large to make strategic decisions that benefit both the positive and the negative effects. The complexities and challenges highlighted above underscore the need for a focused study on Saudi Arabia’s unique position in hosting the 2034 World Cup

The effectiveness of direct and indirect written corrective feedback on the written production of Saudi female EFL preparatory students and their emotional, cognitive, behavioral engagements and satisfaction.
(University of Exeter, 2023-10) Alharbi, May; Adbollahzadeh, Esmaeel
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of four corrective feedback kinds: holistic comments, direct, indirect, and “indirect-direct combined” corrective feedback on the writing production of Saudi EFL female undergraduate students. Specifically, the study seeks to examine whether the various types of CF affect the performance of Saudi students in composing a descriptive essay and measure the improvement in using content, organization, language use, vocabulary, and mechanics Also, it intends to specify the best type of written feedback that supplies them with affective support, fosters motivation, encourages them to continue learning, and improves their descriptive writing skills. It also investigates students' engagement levels behaviorally, cognitively, and emotionally with the WCF. One hundred thirty-six Saudi students were randomly assigned into four groups: one control group and three experimental groups. Each of these groups was exposed to only one type of corrective feedback (Holistic, DF, IF, and DIF) and undertook two tests, pre-test, and post-test, and produced two descriptive essays. To assess the effectiveness of corrective feedback, a quantitative approach was employed, with a quasi- experimental design to measure descriptive writing proficiency. Data were collected using two different instruments: a pre and post-test and a student's engagement and satisfaction questionnaire. The student performance within each group was compared using the paired-sample T-test, while the performance across the four groups using the one-way ANOVA test. The results of the data analysis showed that providing EFL students with indirect CF followed by direct CF (combined) through the process-genre approach was the most effective strategy in improving their proficiency in descriptive essay writing—including content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. The results also revealed that students in the IDCF group showed the highest behavioral, cognitive, and emotional engagement with teaching approaches and feedback. ID group students closely followed, although their emotional engagement was narrower. However, IF group students displayed positive behavioral engagement, but their cognitive and emotional involvement was less comprehensive. Some students had limited interaction, resulting in neutral or negative engagement. The findings are discussed in the context of the related literature and provide pedagogical implications and recommendations for future research

    Artificial Intelligence: Voice Assistants
(University of Manchester, 2023) Almirabi, Alaa; Mehandjiev, Nikolay
The increasing amount of data and the need to rapidly retrieve information has prompted individuals to rely on technology. Voice assistants have been developed as an innovative tool that provides a natural interface to retrieving information from the digital world and even instructing simple transactions such as purchasing items off the Web. A voice assistant is a software application driven by AI that operates as a personal information manager, such as Siri, Amazon Alexa and Google Now. However, a deeper understanding of users' perceptions regarding voice assistants is necessary to increase user engagement and ensure users continue using them. This need motivates the exploratory study presented in this thesis. It aims to investigate the relationship between individuals and their home's voice assistants to identify the main characteristics that facilitate establishing a significant and engaging connection between them, leading to their continuous use of the voice assistant. This research thus aims to enhance the post-adoption stage by providing a valuable contribution to improving the relationship between users and their home voice assistants. The main findings of this study indicate that both perceived anthropomorphism and perceived intelligence significantly impact the continuous intention to use and engage with the voice assistant. Nevertheless, the importance of these relationships comes from specific crucial mediators such as engagement, rapport, engagement motivations, perceived value and satisfaction. These factors significantly influence the user's intention to use and engage with voice assistant technology.
